Boys are to complete 2 projects, 1 group and 1 individual.
Deadline: 2nd Nov, Friday.
Group Project: max 4 per group
Project can be presented in various forms, such as a drama, slide show. mini-exhibition , scrapbook, song/rap/cheer, etc. The presentation should cover the following key points:
1. What have you learnt about this topic and its related aspect[s] of Total Defence?
2. How can we play a part in it?
The following shows the possible topics that the pupils can present on.
- Conserving Our Heritage — What makes up our heritage and what can we do to protect and promote it?
- Identifying Singapore — Our icons/landmarks and their significance for us.
- We, The Citizens — To be Singaporean is to be.../ I’m proud to be Singaporean because...
- Our Past, Present & Future — Looking at Singapore through the years.
- Arts Alive! — Exploring arts activities/the arts scene in Singapore.
- Did You Know? — Little known places of historical interest/value in Singapore.
- Slice Of Singapore — Exploring neighbourhoods/places with unique identities in Singapore.
- No Place Like Home — Looking at all the things that make Singapore home.
- Did You Know? — Little known facts about our ethnic customs/traditions in Singapore.
- What A Lot In Common — Exploring the common practices/customs/traditions shared by our ethnic groups.
- Let’s Celebrate! — Exploring the festivities and joyous occasions of our ethnic groups.
- Feast! — Exploring the cuisine, food traditions and dining etiquette of our ethnic groups.
- Our Many Places Of Worship — Exploring their origins, history, and significance.
- Let’s Get Crafty — The arts/crafts of our ethnic groups.
- Racial Harmony Day — Looking at the origins/significance of this day and the activities we can hold to commemorate it.
- Speak Up! — Exploring the richness and uniqueness of our ethnic groups’ languages.
- Route To Success — Examining a model of economic achievement In Singapore. (e.g., sea port, airport, Jurong industrial estate, etc)
- Building A Knowledge-based Economy — Why and How?
- Life-long Learning — What it means for us.
- Make Learning Fun! — Exploring ways to make learning/skills improvement in school fun and enjoyable.
- Food/Water/Fuel Rationing Exercises — What do we need to know?
- Shelter Exercises — What do we need to know?
- Blood Donation Exercises — What do we need to know and how can I donate?
- First Aid Skills — What do we need to learn?
- The Singapore Civil Defence Force — What do they do?
- Civil Defence In Action — Looking at real-life examples. (e.g., Hotel New World collapse)
- Civil Defence In School/At Home — Looking at the opportunities to make Civil Defence skills/knowledge/habits a part of daily life.
- Fire Safety — What do we need to know?
- National Service — Looking at its history, origins, significance.
- The Singapore Armed Forces — What do they do?
- Our Defence Industries — What are their roles in Military Defence?
- Keeping Fit — Ways of promoting healthy living in school/at home.
Individual Project
Boys are given a menu of Total Defence activities to choose to participate in. Different activities on the menu, depending on their difficulty level, will have different points pegged to them. Pupils have to obtain a minimum number of 25 points to pass this activity, and they have to cover at least two aspects of Total Defence in their choice of activities.
After they have completed their activities, pupils are to share their learning points/experiences with their peers.
Psychological Defence
5 point - Compile a set of pictures/photos of our national symbols (at least 3), accompanied by a short write-up of their significance/ symbolism.
5 point - Design a jacket for a book promoting the arts in Singapore.
5 point - Compile a set of pictures/photos of our national landmarks (at least 3), accompanied by a short write-up of their significance and history.
10 point - Design a 1-day tour itinerary for a heritage trail around Singapore (including a short description of each place).
10 point - Design a 1-day tour itinerary on World War II-related sites in Singapore (including a short description of each place).
15 point - You are a cub reporter for your school’s newsletter. Produce a short article (with photos) on the highlights of any of the museums in Singapore.
Social Defence
5 point - Compile a list of ‘dos’ & ‘don’ts’ for the customs of our ethnic groups (at least 3 ‘dos’ and 3 ‘don’ts’ for each ethnic group chosen).
5 point - Produce a cassette tape on everyday phrases/greetings in our four main languages (at least 10 phrases/greetings). Design a ‘Singapore cookbook’ with at least 2 traditional dishes for each of our ethnic groups.
10 point - Design a brochure introducing the major festivals of our ethnic groups.
10 point - Design a 1-day tour itinerary of the places of worship in Singapore (including a short description of each place and each religion represented).
10 point - Design a brochure that aims to increase awareness of Racial Harmony Day.
Economical Defence
5 point - Compile a set of 10 newspaper clippings highlighting the importance of skills upgrading/retraining and life-long learning.
10 point - Design a brochure promoting IT courses for teenagers.
10 point - Design a brochure highlighting any example of Singapore’s economic achievement.
10 point - Design a 1-day tour itinerary to places showing Singapore’s economic progress and development (including a short write-up on each place).
10 point - A new centre promoting the spirit of lifelong learning among Singaporeans is about to open. Design a logo for the centre (with a short description of the significance of the logo).
15 point - Your school is organising a 1-day ‘Learning Camp’ to cultivate the spirit of life-long learning among pupils. Develop a programme of activities for this camp.
Civil Defence
5 point - Prepare a first aid kit for your home.
5 point - Design a poster highlighting basic fire safety/prevention measures.
5 point - Compile a list of your school’s nearest bomb shelters, their locations and the procedures for participation in a bomb shelter exercise.
10 point - Design a guide-book on basic first aid skills.
10 point - The Singapore Civil Defence Force is recruiting Civil Defence volunteers. Design a brochure to encourage people to volunteer.
10 point - There is going to be a 1-day Civil Defence camp in your school to help pupils learn about Civil Defence and pick up various skills. Design a programme of activities for the camp.
15 point - You are a cub reporter for your school’s newsletter. Produce a short article (with photos) on the Civil Defence Heritage Gallery at the Central Fire Station (located at Hill Street).
Military Defence
5 point - Compile a set of 5 newspaper clippings highlighting the importance of having a strong, capable defence force in Singapore.
5 point - Your school wants to encourage pupils to exercise more and keep fit and healthy. Design a poster to promote this.
10 point - Your brother is about to go for his full-time National Service and is worried about what is in store for him. Design a brochure to address his concerns about National Service.
10 point - The Singapore Armed Forces is made up of the three services. What are they? Compile a scrapbook on them and what they do. (The scrapbook can contain newspaper clippings, photos, etc.)
